Fixing Problems Before They Start!

Why do we force everyone to go through the extra hassle of data logging their ATS-Vs before we will tune them? Because we don’t want to add boost to cars that might already be ticking time bombs. Check out this recent data scan from a totally stock car with OEM tune. In this case the owner had no idea there was anything wrong. This table shows average Knock Retard (KR) by airflow versus engine speed. You can see massive amounts of KR everywhere, because his intercooler was not working at all. This was confirmed by MAT (manifold air temperature) remaining > 180 degrees at WOT (wide open throttle). Having learned this we would never consider shipping out a canned tune that adds four to six more pounds of boost to this ATS-V without first getting the intercooler repaired. By data logging your car Tapout Can identify problems such as this and make sure they are addressed before moving forward. Once the intercooler is fixed, we can start tuning the car.

Tapout Tune of the Week!

After losing faith in the quality of work performed by my dealer’s performance shop, I started to question the safety characteristics of my dyno tune. Knowing several friends that had their ATS-V’s tuned by Tapout, I reached out Scott with my concerns. Before purchasing a remote tune, Scott asked me to send him a copy of my tune and a few logs. Upon reviewing, Scott noted several issues, two of which were alarming.

First, the ECM was not reacting to throttle input appropriately. The screenshot below illustrates a full-throttle attempt 33 mph. However, the ECM didn’t open the throttle to 100% until the car hit 58 mph.

Next, and of great concern to me, the previous tuner completely disabled the knock retard and intercooler protections as illustrated below.

Knowing that my car was not adequately protected, I had hesitations taking it to the track, let alone driving it at all. I immediately decided that the car needed a retune with the safety of the engine being my primary concern.

Within about two hours of purchasing my remote tune, Scott sent me the initial baseline tune. Over one week, I received a total of three tunes that not only left the knock and intercooler protections in place. I felt the increased performance and responsiveness. Additionally, the shift points were dialed in, and my desire to drive the car was at an all-time high.

When Scott announced the introduction of two new features, Lean Cruise Mode and the ability to bypass Cadillac’s max boost limit at startup. I reached back out, and within minutes, I received an updated tune file. I’ll let the log speak for itself. The following screenshot illustrates that at WOT, the air/fuel ratio is within one to two percent of perfect across the board using 93 octane from Costco.

Getting my car retuned by Tapout was by far the investment that I put in my vehicle. And believe me, there’s been a lot of money put into this thing. It’s that time of the day again. You’re at work, it’s Friday and you’ve got one thing on your mind: Going FAST! Fast is a relative term, but you have a Tapout Tuned ATS-V and you know it runs like a bat out of hell so you’re itching to get out on the streets and make your way to Mexico…

As we have all learned, an aftermarket tune is the single best performance enhancement you can make to the ATS-V. Lee from Texas was working with us on a  Remote Tune, but right away we found that something was amiss. Through further investigation we were able to determine that someone who previously completed service on this car neglected to reconnect a vacuum hose, Lee had been driving his ATS-V for more than one year with only six pounds of boost! That issue was resolved and Lee was off to the races! “I can’t imagine how many hours Scott has spent perfecting my car. His responses were very quick, and his attitude was patient and encouraging”. As many ATS-V owners have come to realize, their cars are in a class of their own. The LF4 is an incredible platform capable of performing well past the limits GM put in place, but along with that comes the realization that this can be a difficult car to fully understand. The complexities of our E92/A ECMs are obvious when you realize there are 8,500 potential charts and tables that are available for modification. Knowing that, you want to make sure that any aftermarket tuning on your ATS-V is done by someone who fully understands all the ins and outs of such a car. Tapout Tuning has devoted itself to the LF4 platform and can provide the expertise and knowledge to safely tune your ATS-V.
